About The National MPA and OECM Forum

Frequently Asked Questions

Indonesia protects marine areas to safeguard the rich biodiversity found in its seas, including coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds. These ecosystems are important for keeping the oceans healthy, supporting fish populations, protecting coastlines from erosion and storms, and helping to fight climate change by storing carbon.

Marine protected areas help ensure that fish stocks remain healthy so communities can continue to rely on them for food and income. They also support tourism and recreation, protect coastal villages from storm damage, and help preserve traditional ways of life.

About 29.3 million hectares, or 9% of Indonesia’s marine territory, are currently protected. To reach the target of 97.5 million hectares by 2045, this effort needs support from government, communities, NGOs, the private sector, and the general public. Sharing knowledge, promoting educational materials, and encouraging best practices are all part of making this vision a reality.

Protecting Indonesia’s marine areas is a shared responsibility. The government, local communities, indigenous peoples, NGOs, academics, the private sector, and international partners all work together to keep our seas healthy. The MPA and OECM Consortium is one of the key partners, bringing together organizations such as WWF Indonesia, Coral Triangle Center (CTC), RARE Indonesia, Konservasi Indonesia, Pesisir Lestari, and Rekam Nusantara, with support from Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) and WCS Indonesia.

Together, these partners help develop and manage marine protected areas and promote effective conservation practices across Indonesia.

There are many ways you can make a difference! You can join local conservation efforts, support sustainable fishing and tourism, take part in educational programs, or be part of the National MPA and OECM Forum. By learning, sharing, and taking action — even through simple eco-friendly choices — you help protect Indonesia’s seas and inspire others to do the same.
